In our yearly quest to explore the world's most interesting mountains, we find ourselves in December of 2011 at the base of the Matterhorn in picturesque Zermatt, Switzerland.
The Matterhorn stands an imposing 14,690 feet and is situated in the Swiss Alps, overlooking the Italian border. The Matterhorn derives its name from the German words Matte, meaning “meadow,” and Horn, which translates to “peak.” The Matterhorn actually has two, distinct summits, the Swiss summit on the east and the Italian summit on the west. This beautiful mountain has etched itself as an iconic emblem of the Alps.
