Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin, 27, was killed over the weekend in what many are referring to as a “freak accident.” Los Angeles Police Department reported that Yelchin was found dead on Saturday night, pinned between the back of his car and the front gate of his home in Studio City.
Authorities confirmed that his car was a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalled in April. According to the recall report, some models of Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2014 and 2015 were found to have a defect that increased the risk of drivers being struck by their own vehicle if they get out of the car while the engine is still running and the parking brake is not engaged. The recall report also went on to say that drivers had trouble telling if the automatic transmission was in park – if it wasn’t in park, the car could roll away if left unattended.
When NHTSA first reported the car defect, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles released a statement saying they would recall more than 800,000 vehicles in the United States and send notices to drivers who were affected by the recall. The recall was issued on the grounds of insufficient warning letting drivers know of the car’s risk.
