Hip replacement procedures can ease patients’ pain and help them regain their mobility. While, most of the time, these procedures happen without incident, there have been cases where these implants have been recalled after they had already been implanted in patients.
Below, our Los Angeles product liability attorneys discuss the recent DePuy ASR hip replacement recall that necessitates revision surgeries for thousands of patients.
The DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Recall
DePuy ASR hip replacements have been used in patients in the United States since 2005. Now, DePuy hip devices including the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System have been subject to a recall.
Patients with these devices have experienced the following symptoms:
Fractures
Noises emanating from the implant such as popping or crunching sounds
The sensation that the hip is not “in place”
An inability to perform physical activity
Dislocation and/or popping free from joint
Pain and swelling in the hip, groin, leg, or lower back
Heightened levels of metal in the bloodstream
Bone erosion due to an excess of osteoclasts
These symptoms caused by the defective DePuy hip devices have required many patients to undergo a painful, risky revision surgery. The manufacturer estimates that nearly 10,000 patients will have to undergo this same procedure.
This number may be an underestimation, however, as symptoms from a failed hip device may take years to present themselves.
