Case Result: $1.1M Judgment Against Walmart Inc., Worthington Cylinder Corporation and the Coleman Company, Inc. Over Exploding

Shoop | A Professional Law Corporation recently secured $1.1 million in compensation for a burn injury victim and his wife after a propane canister they purchased from Walmart exploded unexpectedly.

About the Case

As noted in court documents, our clients purchased a 16-ounce Coleman propane canister with a Bernzomatic torch from Walmart to light their wood-burning stove during winter.

Our client was using the propane canister to light the family’s stove when the canister suddenly exploded. Our client suffered second-degree burns to his back and left leg as a result.

In a lawsuit brought against Walmart Inc., the Coleman Company, Inc., and Worthington Cylinder Corporation (which manufactured the propane canister under the Coleman brand name), it was alleged that the canister’s main valve and pressure relief valve had brazing gaps.

Our firm brought claims against the defendants for Negligence, Strict Products Liability, Failure to Recall / Retrofit, and Breach of Implied Warranty and ultimately prevailed in securing a $1,100,002.00 judgment in favor of our clients. This included:

  • $1.05 million in damages for the burn victim’s pain and suffering, medical expenses, and other economic and non-economic damages; and
  • $50,000 in damages for his spouse’s loss of consortium and negligent infliction of emotional distress.
