Exactech knee, hip, and ankle joint devices were recalled in 2021 and 2022. Exactech is a medical device company that develops and manufactures orthopedic implants.
A question that arises is why do these devices fail? They can fail due to a design or manufacturing defect. In the case of the Exactech devices, they were recalled because of defective packaging leading to the oxidation of the products. The devices, which contain a plastic component, were packaged in defective bags that did not have an oxygen barrier layer that protects the knee, ankle, and hip devices from oxidation. Due to oxidation, a chemical reaction, a medical device may wear out prematurely because oxidation can degrade plastics causing the failure of the devices and triggering the cracking or fracturing of the device components. As a result, oxidation may lead to a higher risk of revision surgeries and bone loss with respect to the failure of the medical device.
Due to the product defect, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) instructed physicians not to implant the recalled Exactech hip, knee, and ankle devices. In September 2022, the FDA classified the expanded hip replacement recall as a Class II event and the FDA issued a notice on the issue.
