If you, or someone you know, has suffered a burn injury, there are important steps to take to treat the burn. First, you may need to seek medical treatment depending upon the severity and type of the burn. Treatment of a burn may require hospitalization, surgery, skin grafts and treatment at a burn center depending upon how deep and widespread the burn is, as well as the type of burn – such as a chemical or electrical burn. Following the treatment of a burn, and once you are in a safe and stable situation, you should preserve what remains of the cause of burn – provided that it is safe to do so. For example, if you were burned by a household device, kitchen appliance, beauty product, heating pad, heater fan or power tool, it is important to hold on to the item and store it in a safe and secure location. Second, by preserving the item that caused the burn, a determination can be made as to how the burn occurred. For example, if you were burned by steam from a kitchen appliance, you should hold on to that appliance so that an analysis can be conducted as to whether a defect in the product caused the steam and resulting burn injury. You should also document the injuries that you have suffered as a result of the burn.
